I've been saying this for years, if not decades. I do understand the FOSS philosophy and why the core leaders of the movement are against a single "super distribution" but at the same time Linux's biggest problem is fragmentation and no matter how much the community squawks that most any distribution within a family, say Debian, can be made into any other distribution, it really isn't practical for average Jane. Had the Linux community pooled their resources behind a single distribution, say Ubuntu or Redhat/Fedora, 15 years ago we just might be running Linux now instead of Windows and even if that didn't happen, a real threat to Microsoft's Windows desktop market would ultimately result in a higher quality Windows system as well. I'm not opposed to choice but seriously 500+ different versions of Linux is far too many and if you look at say distrowatch.org, the top tier distributions like LinuxMint have the vast majority of hits so average people seem to agree. Having more choices isn't always better. Have more choices between high quality, bug free software *is* always better but Linux hasn't been able to manage that yet. As you go down the list to the less popular distributions, the quality plummets. > That being said, Ubuntu/Mint is a nice distro, but unfortunately limited > in the available software. But that's another thread.... +1 on LinuxMint. I've just installed both the Mate and kde versions, in a VM, and compared to Manjaro which kept locking up on me, LinuxMint is quite nice. I prefer the kde version as it has more eye candy. > Have a good day, U2. -- flatfish+++ mariana trench
