Safari degrades in performance if you have it open for some time with 
lots of tabs with various things ging on, in my experience. probably 
most browsers do. Simpy quit and reopen - it will also reopen the 
windows/tabs if you set this pref.

To empty the cache you need to enable the Develop menu drop down from 
the Advanced pref.
