I have three different albums called "Discoveries" by three different
artists. If I use the same name in the Album field iTunes tries to
combine them into one so I had to title them "Discoveries CA",
"Discoveries AP" and "Discoveries OP" for Cannonball Adderley, Art
Pepper and Oscar Pettiford. In each case the Artist field contains the
name.

At the same time I have a number of Mosaic sets I called "The Complete
Blue Note Recordings." The artist field indicates who is in each set.
For some reason, iTunes treats these as separate albums even though the
Album titles are identical.

Obviously, I would like to get Discoveries to work the same way but I
can't determine why one works and one doesn't.

I can't explain this one, unless all three albums have the same text in
Album Artist or one of the Sort fields is interfering.

You need to set Album Artist to the same value for this to be a single
album. With separate values in Artist and a blank Album Artist, iTunes
shows them as separate albums.

(The Compilation option may also work without needing to set Album
Artist but I usually set Album Artist anyway, to "Various Artists" if
nothing else is appropriate.)

Album Artist is the key. The Blue Note sets all had the Album Artist
set to match the Artist field. The Discoveries albums did not have the
Album Artist set. When I corrected that and removed the artist
abbreviations from the Album title, they all showed up as individual
albums, the way they should have.

Thanks.

Yeah, I have several different albums with the same name and have never
had iTunes group them into a single album.

"Greatest Hits" and "Live" for example.

Yes.

I only use "Various Artists" for things like a cast album where the
specific singer on a specific song doesn't matter. Otherwise, on
compilation, I set artists by track because there is no overarching work
tying the tracks together.
