SubjectOnly can send Mac OS X v10.10.5 (Yosemite)'s Messages to iPhone numbers?
Message-ID<fuKdnV-OKLyKvUvInZ2dnUU7-NmdnZ2d@earthlink.com>
Hello.

On a new 15" MacBook Pro with its updated Mac OS X v10.10.5, I am trying
to figure out why some American mobile phone numbers don't work when I
try to send messages from Messages app. I get a red color background and
a number is not registered to Messages error. Is it because these
numbers are not iPhone users? I had no problems sending to iPhone users
though. My friend said he had no problems sending to non-iPhone users. I
am confused what I am missing or doing wrong.

Thank you in advance. :)

Make sure you have text message forwarding turned on for your MacBook
Pro in the message settings on your iPhone.

How will that help the people he's asking about, who don't have iPhones?

If they don't have an iPhone you have to send them SMS messages. In
order to do that from a MacBook text forwarding has to be turned on
from his iPhone. Assuming that he has an iPhone with iOS 8.1.

So that they can send an SMS message through their phone from their
MacBook Pro. ; )

"Ant" didn't say anything about having an iPhone, just a MacBook.

He didn't have to say anything about an iPhone. He wants to send a text
message to a non-Apple phone. To do that, he will have to use SMS rather
than iMessage, because iMessage isn't supported on non-Apple phones. If
he wants to send SMS messages from his computer, he has two options:

1. Use the text message forwarding feature already mentioned.
2. Send an email message to the SMS gateway for the recipient's cellular
provider:

Charles referred to "your iPhone" as though "Ant" would have to have one
in order to relay messages from his(?) MacBook.

That's correct. In order for Ant to send an SMS text message from
his computer to someone's phone, he needs to have an iPhone and the
"text message forwarding" feature of OS X (part of Continuity in
Yosemite) enabled. Since the text message is a simple SMS message, th
recipient may have any SMS-capable phone.

Which is correct.

A Mac doesn't have a cellular connection.

It is a cellular connection that is used to send SMS messages.

An iPhone has both an cellular connection and the software to share
that connection for the purpose of allowing you to compose messages on
a Mac that will actually get sent to the cellular carrier via SMS.

Clear now?

If the iPhone shares the same network as the Mac, you can use the OSX
"Messages" App to send and receive iMessages and SMS messages, provided
"Text Message Forwarding" is turned on for network connected OSX and
iOS devices. You should also have "Send as SMS" turned on to send SMS
whenever iMessage is unavailable. I have my iMac and my iPad activated.

You will also be able to answer incoming phone calls directed to the
iPhone's number on the Mac.

Clear as mud. You have to remember where the question originated.

It APPEARS that the "same network" restriction is going away in iOS 9.

And I really hope the same network restriction on calls is NOT going
away. I don't want my iPad to ring at home when I am out, but do when I
am home.

...and I believe that will be dependant on cellular provider support of
VoLTE, and having an iPhone which supports VoLTE.

I think it would make sense to have user options for the function in
preferences.

VoLTE has nothing to do with SMS messaging.

Too many options lead to too many issues. It will be very difficult to
setup a preference that really works for a variety of users.

It's been clear to me for days, ever since someone corrected my
initial assumption that people were talking about the message's
recipient needing an iPhone, instead meaning the MacBook owner.

Apparently it isn't clear to everyone who's still telling "Ant" to
switch on message forwarding on his/her iPhone, when there has been
*no* indication whatsoever that he/she even *has* one.

The indication was this:

'My friend said he had no problems sending to non-iPhone users. I
am confused what I am missing or doing wrong.'

Whether or not Ant has an iPhone, explaining that an iPhone is required
is necessary to answer than sentence.

There hasn't been an indication that Ant does *not* have an iPhone
either. So rather than assuming, we are telling Ant that if he doesn't
have an iPhone, he can't send SMS messages from his Mac.

The wording I saw was "do this on your iPhone," not "if you have an
iPhone, you can do this, otherwise you're out of luck." Let's hope
s/he has one!

I figured that would be common sense, but thanks for pointing it out.
