If the iPhone shares the same network as the Mac, you can use the OSX 
"Messages" App to send and receive iMessages and SMS messages, provided 
"Text Message Forwarding" is turned on for network connected OSX and 
iOS devices. You should also have "Send as SMS" turned on to send SMS 
whenever iMessage is unavailable. I have my iMac and my iPad activated.

You will also be able to answer incoming phone calls directed to the 
iPhone's number on the Mac.
