Uh no. There is no indication that it was re-written. We've had one here
that got the source code and compiled and based on the pan documentation,
it has been a very long time since that code was last updated, unless I
misread something.

Either I compile things manually, or for things with lots of
dependencies I am using Homebrew.

Sure, but installing MacPorts is a pain in the ass and it breaks
constantly AND it requires the full install of XCode. I've given up on
MacPorts just for the latter reason as I cannot keep a 6GB binary around
on my laptop that is completely unnecessary.

I don't remember the isnstallation of MacPorts as difficult nor that it
breaks "constantly". And I want the dev tools anyways...

If you don't have 6GB to spare then you don't have 6GB to spare. Once
Macports installed you've got a world of UNIX software available to you.

It breaks (by design) with every new version of the OS.

I have a world of UNIX software available without Macports too. And I
save 6GB on my laptop.

The annoyance is that there is *no* reason for Macports to require
XCode. None. At all.

The portsystem is a convenient way of installing software. Much like
Gentoo Linux.

You use Homebrew instead... Easy to uninstall it seems... Oki...

Those were on the tip of my tongue, so obvious, right? :)

And to do it that way I suppose I didn't need to add anything else to my MB
install?

Nope, on both counts. But thanks anyway.

You certainly do not need the extra overhead of macports.

So what do you use if not Xcode and MacPorts?

Please pay attention. I didn't say Xcode is not required. Naturally, you
can't compile without a compiler, which is what Xcode provides.

Again, MacPorts is not needed.

OK thanks. I didn't think you were using XCode but possibly some other

You only need the command lines tools (about 300MB last I looked, I
think). You do not need XCode to get the command line tools.

While that's true starting with more recent versions of OS X, with older
versions, the full Xcode suite was required. Since I do OS X software
development, I typically have Xcode installed anyway.

I do too just to support a very lightweight IDE and Pascal (and Ada and C).

If what is said above wrt command line tools is correct, then I'll try
that - 300MB is much better than the bloated DL of XCode.

I think with 10.9 and later, all you need is to issue this terminal
command:

xcode-select --install

Nah, you could always install the command-line tools on their own.

I have Xcode on my iMac, but I have close to 40TB of storage on that
machine.

Nope. You're remembering wrong. I've used Xcode a long time and remember
well that before 10.7, Apple did not provide a separate installer for
Xcode command-line tools. Apple's first stand-alone command-line tools
installer was released in 2012, after 10.7 was released. You could not
easily install them separately on earlier systems.

You could fuck around with the installer to force it to install on
earlier systems though:

You're right, sort of, but Xcode 1 was like 400MB or so. Even XCode 3
was like 1GB. It wasn't until like 2010 that XCode started getting huge
(3.2.3 was 2.5GB with the iOS SDK).

The OS X installer used to have an option to install the developer tools,
which included things like make and gcc.

<https://wiki.wxwidgets.org/images/thumb/a/a5/Xcode_Install.gif/600px-Xcode_Install.gif>

That's a screenshot from 10.5, but there were similar options in 10.2 I
am pretty sure, and probably in 10.0 or 10.1.

OK, so I've installed Xcode (without thinking twice), but I never use
it. I just need the command line tools in order to bake a few *nix
binaries.

Is it safe to delete the Xcode.app, so that I can reclaim a few gigs of
my valuable drive space, or would this step damage some of the command
line tools?
