#32306 — El Capitan - known apps (no) problems list

SubjectEl Capitan - known apps (no) problems list
Message-ID<lvqdnZe1da5b8ZDLnZ2dnUU7-X-dnZ2d@giganews.com>
May I propose that, rather than people posting individual app threads,
that people post what is having issues and optionally what is not?
(And rather than comment on the proposal, please either ignore it or add
to it.  I know, I know ...)

List below is "as best I've found out" - no g'tee, w'tee or shirt'tee.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Fusion 7.1.x -	Works under 10.11 (per VMWare Forum)

			-	10.11 does not work under 7.1.1 - but
				there is a workaround.

Adobe C2 ..CS5 -	light testing - OK. May require Java
				re-install

(More Adobe:
http://blog.conradchavez.com/2015/09/30/os-x-10-11-el-capitan-will-adobe-software-work/
)

MS Office 2008 -	?	I'll be upgrading when the new
				v. comes out, but could block me from
				updating to 10.11 for now.

MS Office 2011 -	OK - some users reporting issues, esp.
				with Outlook.

Thunderbird -	Ambiguous replies found. v38 should
				work.

VueScan - Per Hamrick site, OK. Updated support
				from VS 9.5.20 for 10.11

Google Earth		-	?

Brother Printer CC	-	Update available at Brother site

Flight Radar 24		-	?

Handbrake -	? (Ambiguous info found)

HMA Pro VPN -	Support at HMA told me all should be
				well

Mindnode 1.0		-	Ambiguous - a new Mindnode 2.0 has been
				launched for $30. Not worth it IMO. So
				1.0 better work!

There's a web site for that:

<http://roaringapps.com/apps?platform=OS X>

Doesn't have versions of the apps. So, eg: I want to know if Fusion 7.1
works, roaring apps doesn't show the particular v. of Fusion that works...

Further, it's still showing blue for a lot of apps under 10.11 ...
(unknown).

It does have app versions. Some examples:

<http://roaringapps.com/app/1password>
<http://roaringapps.com/app/microsoft-office-2011>
<http://roaringapps.com/app/vmware-fusion-502-503>

It's crowd sourced, so if you have details you should submit them. And
others will be contributing even if you don't.

I just filtered the main listing for "VMware Fusion" and see multiple
hits. The "vmware-fusion-502-503" entry in the above link is a bit dated
compared with this one:

<http://roaringapps.com/app/vmware-fusion>

So it appears version 7.0.1 is confirmed to work in El Capitan.

That's good news (I'm at 7.1.2 but if .0.1 works, 7.1.2 is likely to ...)

Still running 6.0.6 here in Yosemite. : D At some point I'll be forced
to upgrade...

Thanks. I hadn't drilled down by app name.

To date a lot of the 10.11 status for my key apps are still "blue"

I will once I install 10.11 ... OTOH I don't want to install it until
most of my apps are shown to work well. I can wait for MS Office "2016"
(sometime this fall) if need be. I can also install it on my SO's MBA
in the meantime and test many of the apps...

(DL'd it yesterday at work and made a USB install 'disk' for all the Macs).

I'm in no hurry to upgrade here either - especially on my closet Mac
mini server, where I run tons of services. And likewise, our MacBook Pro
will probably see it first.

Have you looked at Libreoffice or one of the other free suites?
Possibly it can't meet your needs but I have read it adheres to national
standards to a greater extent than Office. Of course, you can't always
believe what you read!

LibreOffice is fine. As is the Apple suite.

OTOH I have to exchange files with clients, suppliers and others (not to
mention in-office) and I've found over the years that attempting to use
LibreOffice or Apple's office suite (Pages, Numbers) leads to formatting
issues, loss of time screwing with "exporting" from the rebel formats to
MS Office formats (esp. with the inevitable last minute changes and
re-issues) that it is not worth my time to use them.

They're all fine apps. They just don't work in the real business world
where the de-facto standard is MS Office. Pity.

I tested Excel and Word (Office for Mac 2008) on 10.11 (SO's MBA) and
both seem to work fine.

Not sure what you mean by "national standards" but there is this
nonsense: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Office_Open_XML which I defy you
to read with anything approaching genuine interest from start to end.

Some countries, esp. in Europe, have mandated that government offices
use open OS and apps (Linux/LibreOffice). So they've picked that (using
the format above).

In practice, if I send files in MS Office formats I'm pretty sure my
correspondent can read them.
