Once you realized the fallacy over time (the time you spent getting your
collection in to iTunes in order to save time later) you find it boring.
  Amusing.

You're being extremely silly. Some of my movies were purchased through
iTunes on the Apple TV in a matter of seconds. Next?

Sorry, Alan. No matter how many silly little nitpicks you make, the fact
remains using physical DVDs to watch movies is far more inconvenient,
cumbersome, and slow than playing digital media through a media server
like iTunes. Arguing about this just makes you look rather foolish to
the rest of us.

Truly, I'm bored. Have fun with your "last word".

If the movie is on my bookshelf downstairs then it is a lot more
convenient (and cheap) to throw it into the DVD player than to load it
into iTunes in the first place.

Why not. Again, you're ignoring the effort to import media into iTunes.
Even paying for a movie via iTunes requires a download (and consequent
time to wait - and then of course you'll want to back that up too...

Similarly if you had no hands it might be difficult without additional
equipment.

Or how 'bout if you had no electricity except that generated by a
bicycle--also pretty difficult, right?. How about if your vision was
failing and the doctor told you that at the very best you only had
enough eye-sight to watch 5 more movies. That would make the process
pretty tricky too!

Oh--how about if your dvd player was at your brother's house, the DVD
you wanted to play was at your ex-wife's and your TV was in storage
across town. Wow that would present some real problems.

Hey--what if the tv was built into the back of a moving car, you're on
a motorcycle and your DVD player was wireless and powered, but was
operating in a helicopter moving at a slight angle to that car. So
maybe you could watch part of the movie--while also carefully
navigating traffic or your cycle--but sooner or later that helicopter
was going to loose it's connection. Wow, that's a real DRAMA!

I guess in this context that does almost sound rational.

Fist of all, you can rip the movies whenever you want, and once you
insert the disc, it's unattended. Come back in 15 minutes and put in
another disc. Repeat every 15 minutes, or whenever.

Second, ripping DVDs is far faster than watching them, so in the course
of a 2 hour movie, without paying much attention at all and with very
little effort, I can rip 6 DVDs.

Third, I can rip DVDs while I am doing something else, reading mail,
browsing the web, writing code, or whatever, so the time it takes is,
effectively, near zero.

Drop a stack or random DVDs off at the computer and go through them,
eventually.

I ripped all my DVDs ages ago and haven't bought any since. I bought two
Blue Rays, which I ripped. Everything else I own is purely digital.

And tragically, ironically way off track. You're consistent, I'll say that.

The case referred to was playing a file on my computer using iTunes or
not. The DVD discussion is a side track.

Of course you're not mentioning how the file got onto your computer in
the first place. That was in magic 0 time?

Last time I handbraked a DVD it certainly did not happen any quicker
than loading a DVD into the player. I appreciate that it's more or less
a hands off background process, but it's not 0 effort at all.

(Indeed I can't even Handbrake real DVD's right now, I have to to
re-install specific s/w to get around copyright - so that means I
haven't done it since my prior iMac ... over 2 years ago).

Other than badly mastered disks, not at all. Except the "warnings" you
can skip everything else.

Disks were badly mastered in a lot of cases. Some old ones force you to
the menu to deselect closed captions. Big deal. Recent (last 10 years
or more) disks allow you to jump over everything other than the warning.

Not killing me at all. Watch DVD's less and streamed content more in
any case. I'm not going to rip DVD's to a disk for the convenience of
watching it 4 years from now and saving a minute then by wasting time now.

Of course. I'm the OP and my problem was getting certain videos into
iTunes in the first place.

I forgot to mention that in Help I had read that the way to get
problem videos into iTunes is to first import into iPhoto and then
from there export to iTunes. The 1020p video imported into iPhoto
and played nicely from there, but there was no obvious way to get it
into iTunes. Copy and paste didn't work, nor did drag and drop, and
there was nothing useful in File > Export.

Elsewhere in iTunes help I have, since making the original post,
found instructions to open the file in QuickTime Player and then go
to File > Export > iTunes. That worked.

So that particular problem is solved. Meanwhile, it's clear that all
the help info hasn't been updated to the latest thing.

I can't access Finder when I'm in the living room fiddling with the ATV.

You seem to be on your computer rather than in the livingroom with your ATV.

It's use for commercial ends is a nuisance, but in terms of
functionality, I think it's great. But it's more or less like a
database, fill it with disorganisation and bad tags and such, and
that's what you'll get out of fit.

If you were using AirPlay and had a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, you
certainly could.

Both! The computer is upstairs in my office but using AirPlay I see the
screen via the ATV.

It's ability as a database are not bad (but I think it's fucked up a
Mozart collection - need to check that) - what I despise is the horrible
UI that seems to get worse with each iteration.

I don't want to, I have an easier solution that fiddling with my
computer on the television set.

It's clear than many people have many solutions to many problems. Some
of them overlap with the OP, most of them do not. He is using iTunes,
he has some import issues. This is the perfect opportunity for csma to
explain to him why he shouldn't be having THAT set of issues, he should
concern himself with THIS set of issues instead. In other words he
needs a different problem, and many of us have great replacements which
we happened to have perfect solutions for!

I never claimed my solution was the best solution. It is my best solution.

I use VideoDrive to import video of any kind into my ATV.

I didn't think the Apple TV has storage.
