The only reason I mentioned DVDs is because I tend to *create* my own digital media files from them - as opposed to getting my digital media elsewhere without having the original DVD. Encoding a DVD is a one-time task, as you know. The point is I can *play* my digital media with a couple button presses on my remote control - without having to deal with OS X logins, Spotlight searches, Finder windows, QuickTime Player, and so on. I have no DVD player connected to my television set. If I did, then physically locating and plopping a DVD in just to play it would *still* be more cumbersome than simply hitting a button on the remote control. > I certainly don't need my movies available wherever I go. Well that's good because you *can't* have them wherever you go using your methods. And note I didn't say my movies are available everywhere I go - just everywhere I *need* them, which means on any Mac or iOS device in the house. >> You have to log into a computer, find a file, open it, stream it. Nonsense. All I do is press a couple buttons on my remote to navigate to the thing I want to play. In most cases, it's one to three button presses (Computers > Movies > Blah for instance). In contrast, you have to: 1. Log into your computer. 2. Spotlight search for the file you want to play. 3. Open the file in QuickTime Player or some other suitable app. 4. Play the movie through AirPlay. Your AirPlay-from-computer method is much more slow and cumbersome. That's all there is to it. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. Use a real news client instead. JR

When you first loaded the movie into iTunes you put the effort "then" as opposed to when you played it via the ATV. > > In contrast, you have to: > > 1. Log into your computer. > 2. Spotlight search for the file you want to play. > 3. Open the file in QuickTime Player or some other suitable app. > 4. Play the movie through AirPlay. Log into my computer takes about 2 sec. Spotlight, same that launches the video app. Pretty much instant. Press the AirPlay button. 1 second. The ATV is always ON, so when I turn on the television, the movie is ready. > > Your AirPlay-from-computer method is much more slow and cumbersome. > That's all there is to it. No. Not really. Only in your defense of your preferences. From time to time, yes, I'll spend more time looking for some obscure video. But then it's the same in iTunes when I'm looking for some obscure music - would be the same with an obscure video.

I have quite a lot of DVD's and a bunch of BRD's. They all play fine as do my CD's bought in the 80's. Prognostic is they still will. UHD is a wasteful farce. You'd need a monster screen to actually see that level of detail from a normal distance and viewing perspective. AFAIC BRD is just enough beyond resolving to be worth it. For most movies DVD, upsampled by a really good BR player, is more than crisp enough.

Really. You speak from experience? Regardless, huge is in the eye of the beholder. And that's what she said, too.

Darn. Fortunately, not so far along with the copper smelter than it was easy to change specs for silver. And then the gold plating I will farm out.
