Now you're just being silly. We're talking about *playing* digital media
here. The only reason I mentioned DVDs is because I tend to *create* my
own digital media files from them - as opposed to getting my digital
media elsewhere without having the original DVD. Encoding a DVD is a
one-time task, as you know.

The point is I can *play* my digital media with a couple button presses
on my remote control - without having to deal with OS X logins,
Spotlight searches, Finder windows, QuickTime Player, and so on.

I have no DVD player connected to my television set. If I did, then
physically locating and plopping a DVD in just to play it would *still*
be more cumbersome than simply hitting a button on the remote control.

Well that's good because you *can't* have them wherever you go using
your methods. And note I didn't say my movies are available everywhere I
go - just everywhere I *need* them, which means on any Mac or iOS device
in the house.

It's pretty much instantly available, and far easier (just a button
press on the remote).

Not here. It takes a couple seconds to drag a digital media file into
iTunes. Must be you.

Yes. DVD's are digital media.

So is playing it once and watching it once. I rent a lot of movies, but
only very few are worth another view.

Congrats. And I can *play* the same using the mouse and keyboard. And
I can play stuff that hasn't *aforehand* been "prepped" into iTunes.

Except that you, at some point, had to curate your iTunes video
collection. So you spent the time at some time...

The only place I would play them would be on my Mac (1%) or on the
television (whatever 100 - 1 is).

It takes a "couple seconds" once you've _located_ it, or after it's been
loaded in a DVD player and mounted.

You're just moving the point where the effort takes place and calling it
a savings where none has happened.

Nonsense. All I do is press a couple buttons on my remote to navigate to
the thing I want to play. In most cases, it's one to three button
presses (Computers > Movies > Blah for instance).

In contrast, you have to:

1. Log into your computer.
2. Spotlight search for the file you want to play.
3. Open the file in QuickTime Player or some other suitable app.
4. Play the movie through AirPlay.

Your AirPlay-from-computer method is much more slow and cumbersome.
That's all there is to it.

Whoosh. When you first loaded the movie into iTunes you put the effort
"then" as opposed to when you played it via the ATV.

Log into my computer takes about 2 sec.
Spotlight, same
that launches the video app. Pretty much instant.
Press the AirPlay button. 1 second.

The ATV is always ON, so when I turn on the television, the movie is ready.

No. Not really. Only in your defense of your preferences. From time
to time, yes, I'll spend more time looking for some obscure video. But
then it's the same in iTunes when I'm looking for some obscure music -
would be the same with an obscure video.

Why are you chaps going on and on about a 20th C. Technology? We are at
the dawn of UHD disks, at which point BRDs will start a long slow
decline as DVDs are currently experiencing.

I have quite a lot of DVD's and a bunch of BRD's. They all play fine as
do my CD's bought in the 80's. Prognostic is they still will.

UHD is a wasteful farce. You'd need a monster screen to actually see
that level of detail from a normal distance and viewing perspective.
AFAIC BRD is just enough beyond resolving to be worth it. For most
movies DVD, upsampled by a really good BR player, is more than crisp enough.

But to make the UHD tv work properly, you need the $2000 gold-plated

Yes. Photography.

Yes. Selecting my television according to where it would be placed and
the viewing distance. Selected just so it would be a little beyond
