Yeah and I can't belive people pay for word processors when I
could just draw by hand on paper with a pen.  Come to think of it
printers must be the biggest scam ever!

While electronic filing makes the IRS's job easier (and for folks
with relatively simple returns it IS free - the government wants
people to do so and provides incentives to make it happen) - the
vast majority of the benefit of tax software isn't for the government -
it's for you.  You have to file whether you use the tax software
or not.
