Um.. no. iPhoto didn't go away until very recently. Sounds like you
didn't update.

GarageBand comes with every Mac sold since it came out back in 2004.
Originally it was part of iLife, which was included with new Macs, but
now it is a stand-alone product.

If for some reasons you have managed to stay current on OS X and not
bought a new Mac since 2004, you may have to buy GarageBand for $5.

I used GarageBand today to create a remix of the song "New Phone, Who
dis?" from the TV show You're the Worst for a friend of mine to use as
his ringtone. In a few minutes of work i was able to cut up the song and
create an entirely new mix including a part where I overlayed two
different parts of the song so they nearly matched up and sounded like
the female part was a duet.

Making ringtones is about the only thing I use GarageBand for, but it is
brilliant at that.

The only real project I've done is a remix of SPirit In the Sky and
Goldfrapp's Ooh La La in which the two songs weave in and out, trading
back and forth all over the identical baseline. I like that one a lot,
but it does confuse iTunes. That took an hour.

But if you don't have GarageBand, that's an easy problem to solve.
