Thanks, nospam! This is the detail I was looking for but didn't understand from the other posts. Looks like I can do what I want to do after all. As to backup, I'm not worried in this case because the iPod under consideration will only have a few gigs of songs which will often be changed. Of course, the original songs on the Macs are all backed up with Time Machine and disk images. Thanks again.
