There are plenty of general purpose screen capture apps that can be used 
to record from Skype too -- ScreenRecord, iShowU, Screenflow, 
Screenflick etc. But they tend to be more expensive ($15 - $100).

The built-in Quicktime X app will record live video or sound too, but 
annoyingly not both at the same time (the RIAA's doing, I presume...)

Sounds about right... there are various video compression apps you could 
play with to get the size down at the expense of quality, but at the end 
of the day, any long, reasonable quality video file is going to be big.
