Remember that it was altered and take steps to ensure you save it in
a format you actually want.  Your image shows what it does on import
of a particular format.  Hardly a basis for declaring that it does
that on _output_ of all formats.

I know nothing about PS, but what I know of GC leads me to believe that
means 8 bits per color, not eight bits total.
