I'm betting if you delete the apps from /Applications the App Store
won't suggest updates for them anymore. 

You can save yourself quite a bit of space by deleting Garage Band's
support files as well:

# du -cksh /Library/Application\ Support/GarageBand/
2.6G	/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/
