Don't know if anybodies still following this question, but, the problem is the Samsung SOFTWARE.
Installing Kies, or SmartSync, replaces the "driver" (kext maybe?) for regular Android device access. YOU HAVE TO UNINSTALL -NOT DRAG-TO-TRASH- THE SAMSUNG SOFTWARE AND PROBABLY ANDROID FILE TRANSFER AND RE-INSTALL AFT TO FIX THE PROBLEM!!

Before 10.12.xx I used to use SR Tools to replace ssuddrv.kext to use Kies to backup my S5,
and swap backto keep regular file access to my phone AND any android device.

Currently have no solution for Samsung software and non-samsung android devices.
Side Note; Breaks the Samsung Barnes and Noble Nook (Android 4 or 5)
