I actually used Gimp to design fonts for one of the DS games I shipped a few years back. :-)
Gimp 2.8 is great for simple work but it (still) sucks compared to Photoshop in functionality. I created a .PSD in PS CS2 back on Sept 2006 that _still_ doesn't render properly in Gimp 2.8. Every few years I try it out with the latest Gimp version so see what is still broken. Gimp inches along every year. I give an ETA of another 7 years before my .PSD file renders properly. :-)
While Gimp (finally) added layer groups it's support for layer styles are still half-assed: Translation, they don't work out of the box and you need to use a plugin for that functionality. It supports -most- of the layer blends that Photoshop does.

Gimp also blows for 16-bit grayscale support. PS not only supports 16-bit/channel but also 32-bit/channel. You have to use the experimental version of Gimp if you want to mess around with HDR.
Gimp also doesn't allow layer names to be identical which is kind of annoying but I can live with that.
Other then that, for price, free as in beer, and freedom, free as in speech, Gimp is great.
For amateur work: Gimp is my default "go to" tool. It is "good enough"
For professionals Gimp doesn't hold a candle to PS.
But then as an OpenGL/OpenGL ES/Graphics expert I'm kind of biased. :-)
