Hi Phil,

My guess is that those files were rbak's and in that case you will need an Apollo to read the tapes. Or perhaps you can set up a MESS machine and a QIC-24 tape. Where are you located and how many tapes do you have? The risky thing with tapes of this age are how well the drive band has withstood the test of time. I find that the Apollo Archive drives accellerate very quickly and put a lot of stress on the band and can ruin old tapes quickly. Does anyone else have this experience? I found that my Sun QIC-150 drive accellerates more gracefully and are gentler on tapes.

One thing you could do is use copytape (or something similar) to copy it to another tape - send me that one and I would be happy to read it on my Apollo and put it on whatever format works for you. I would hate to try this with the original and risk destroying it...

Also, if you are coming down with a case of Apollo nostalgia, I might be willing to sell you one of my 20+ machines, sans monitor. Most have bad hard drives so I would have to build one that works. Not something I could do right away though.

-Kurt
