Regardless of the software problems: be aware that you should test your
tape drive first with unimportant tapes. Many old QIC drives have old
rubber castan/stuff inside to transport the tape or press it somewhere,
and that's not soft/how it should be any longer after that period of
time.

So, don't use your precious tape first, or better: use a known-good tape
drive, or at least let the old tape drive get inspected first.
