After BT stopped news feeds, it was suggested on this group to change to nntp.aoie.org which has worked well for me until today. I now get the error "Connection to server failed - Connection timed out" and the page http://www.aoie.org/ goes to a "Placeholder" page saying that the owqners have not written any other pages. Does anyone know what has happened and if it is permanent? If so can anyone suggest an alternative? I hate having to use google groups on a PC to post this. Alan

Yes - it's down here too.

I have Eternal September too - as it does some groups I want which aoie
doesn't carry.
My newsreader visits both in turn - so if one isn't working the other
probably is. But an outage such as this rarely lasts long.

I assume everyone /is/ using aioe.org, not aoie.org as per the title?? www.aioe.org states "Server is under maintenacnce, will be back in a few hours" There do appear to to be two different servers:- pinging nntp.aioe.org gives the IP address 94.75.214.90, while news.aioe.org is at 94.75.214.39, so perhaps both servers are under maintenance, with nntp having gone off line first, and news later? -- Russell Russell Hafter E-mail to russell at russellhafter dot me dot uk Need a hotel? <http://www.hrs.com/?client=en__blue&customerId=416873103>

Strangely, the service from aioe does seem to vary from place to place. I seem to remember Dave Plowman finding it as good as Eternal-september, and you would appear to have been satified with it to up to now, while druck claims that it has been awful for him. My own experience with it has been nowhere near as bad as druck's, but I do not find it as unproblematic as Eternal-september either. I routinely fetch news from Eternal-september, but fetch from aioe once every few days too, to ensure that its config file stays up to date. aioe also still carries the old argonet groups, unlike Eternal-september, but nothing has been posted there for yonks, apart from the auto-posted faqs, which turn up each month... -- Russell Russell Hafter E-mail to russell at russellhafter dot me dot uk Need a hotel? <http://www.hrs.com/?client=en__blue&customerId=416873103>

As I understand it, among the aioe staff are interested Uni Profs, Uni Support Staff, Grads and Undergrads as well as otherwise engaged students, therefore it's possible that the speed of response to overloads, tech downtime and attacks may have the very occasional seasonal and/or academic calendar dependency. Since you're using Newshound as I am, you don't really need to alter
things as such just add a second file to Config for Eternal September and
it will visit both. It won't download duplicate messages either. If one or
the other is down you will get an error message - but it will still use
the working one. You do need to visit the September site to arrange a user
name and password.
Here's mine as a guide - hope I've given the correct info as it was done
quite some time ago. ;-)

It looks like the site was hacked and they have had to rebuild their database and have (as yet?) only reinstated groups that have any traffic. Apart from the monthly faq the last thread I saw on argonet.zfc was last January about Parcelforce. I would leave it for a few days and if you still want it make a request for it to be reinstated. At least www.aioe.org website is now back on line and not a place holder page. On 2nd Jan when aioe stopped working and I started this thread, I googled for nntp.aioe.org and was asked if I meant a different combination of those letters I think oaie and the first hit was for a site with that name which seemed similar to the www.aioe.org site. It no longer does this so I wonder if it was due to an attack on aioe to get people to give their details to this other "spam" site.
