Given that I like business invoices on paper, I do not see why I should spend my expensive toner to save them money. I send commission invoices abroad by e-mail. I have no idea whether or not they mind. But I cannot think of a single hotel that I deal with that does not send invoices through the post, in spite of the extortionate cost of the German Postal service. But booking confirmations require to be accompanied by insurance certificates which are only supplied on paper and must, by law, be given to the customer. Plus, you really cannot get a PDF version of a Pipedream document meant to be printed on three part NCR paper and expect it to look anything the way it is supposed to look. -- Russell http://www.russell-hafter-holidays.co.uk Russell Hafter Holidays E-mail to enquiries at our domain Need a hotel? <http://www.hrs.com/?client=en__blue&customerId=416873103>

Indeed. If they must send a 'pretty' version in Word etc - why not a plain
text one too? It's only text, FFS.

I understand that may be a requirement of the law (really? which one?) or the issuer so you are stuck with it! May be different, I know, but I have had motor and travel insurance certificates sent by email in the past. Mind you, motor are on a national database which the old bill trust more than any self-printed document. All documents are too easy to forge. Travel insurance is optional anyway so only the issuing company is interested in the validity of the policy and they don't need the cert., for that. It's actually a certificate nobody needs really apart from proof of purchase. It would really only be necessary to forward certs if they are printed on security paper of some sort with watermarks and suchlike and in the unlikely event that insured has to present that cert., back to the company in the case of a claim. If they are simply laser-printed onto ordinary stock, customers may as well print them. > Plus, you really cannot get a PDF version of a Pipedream document meant > to be printed on three part NCR paper and expect it to look anything > the way it is supposed to look. In the absence of NCR paper, and equipped with lasers, we can just print as many copies of stuff as we need. Whether or not a document a customer prints is /exactly/ as you see it in pdream probably doesn't matter as long as all the information is there. Unless your NCR paper is pre-printed with other important information I wouldn't worry. -- Tim Hill of timil.com . . . * supports TFT & shares in cheaper ethical telecoms http://tjrh.eu/phone * has a genuine & spam-proof address for Usenet http://www.invalid.org.uk/ * accepts incoming email: substitute postmaster@ for tim@ ... The accounting is done using a free copy (cover disc) of Quicken, under Windows. Were I to store documents on a computer, I would, I imagine want to do that under RISC OS. Currently I use a KVM switch to switch the monitor between machines, but if I were to replace paper copies (which I find **much** easier to handle), with scanned copies, I would have to buy a scanner (the one I have - cost £10 - only works under Win98) and then I would need to get either a fancy monitor like yours, or a second. I was given my current monitor, so I would need to spend money on a fancy monitor, more money on a scanner, and still end up with a less convenient system. I just find it vastly simpler and quicker to look through half a dozen bits of paper, some which may have hand written notes on, rather than keeping loads of computer files. I can glance at several sheets of paper in the time it takes to open a single PDF. > > But booking confirmations require to be accompanied by > > insurance certificates which are only supplied on paper > > and must, by law, be given to the customer. > I understand that may be a requirement of the law > (really? which one?) The law that requires a tour operator to have a financial protection scheme in place to protect client's monies. If that scheme is insurance based, as mine is, the operator is required to issue a certificate of insurance to each customer. > or the issuer so you are stuck with it! I do not know whether there is anything that states that the certificate must be on paper rather than a digital document, but they are on paper. If instead they were digital, I would need to log in to a website to download the necessary certificates, then print them out. Much more time consuming than issuing pre-printed and pre-numbered paper certificates. Were I a crook I could probably send a dozen different customers a scan of the same document and save a packet. The paper certificates are individually numbered, so sending individual certificates by post is more secure than if I were allowed to send out scans of the paper certificates. > May be different, I know, but I have had motor Never. > and travel insurance certificates sent by email in the > past. In much of the world - such as the USA you need to show your certificate to the medical practitioner before they will treat you. In an emergency I would much rather have a document to show someone, rather than give them a URL or a phone number and trust that they would spend their time checking to see if cover were in place. > It would really only be necessary to forward certs if > they are printed on security paper of some sort with > watermarks and suchlike and in the unlikely event that > insured has to present that cert., back to the company in > the case of a claim. Have you ever seen a PD document designed to be produced on a dot matrix printer that has instead been printed with a PoScript printer driver? These PD docs are not WYSIWYG. As the on screen characters are all the same size, a laser prints them all the same size, and in the system font. And the control characters as well. A dot matrix printer interprets the control codes and puts onto paper what is needed to make a coherent and legible document, printed in an appropriate font. -- Russell http://www.russell-hafter-holidays.co.uk Russell Hafter Holidays E-mail to enquiries at our domain Need a hotel? <http://www.hrs.com/?client=en__blue&customerId=416873103>

Don't confuse emergency treatment with going to the doctor/hospital complaining of feeling sick and having a bit of a headache! If there's a chance that you won't die in the next hour or so then they'll certainly be interested in checking your financial status. If you look a bad bet it's pretty certain that a doctor will politely ask you to leave and try elsewhere. Cheers Alan -- Alan Calder, Milton Keynes, UK.

When I was given a second 1280x1024 display I thought I'd play with the second output on the windoze box so now have three screens. But 1920x1080 on RISC OS is far better than 2560x1024 on windows simply because of all the windoze window furniture clutter and embiggened windows taking up a whole of a (1280) screen without needing to. > but if I were to replace paper copies (which I find > **much** easier to handle), with scanned copies, I wasn't suggesting that. It can be an uphill battle asking people to switch from sending paper to email(!!!): I have a dual filing system (one physical, one virtual) and wouldn't spend my time scanning paper documents I have been sent, just to file them away. [Snip] >and then I > would need to get either a fancy monitor like yours, Sorry. My 1280x1024 RISC OS display died. :-( A 22" 1920x1080 monitor is by no means fancy these days, nor particularly expensive. Per pixel, it was the most economical screen real estate available and it is true to say you can't have too many pixels. 85 quid is not a fancy price for HD loveliness. ;-) http://tinyurl.com/AOC-F22S [Snip] > If instead they were digital, I would need to log in to a > website to download the necessary certificates, then print them out. There are many cases now (apparently) where boy racers insure their pride and joy and then cancel the insurance but keep the certificate. Old Bill will nearly always now not rely on dox and always check the DVLA insurance database and/or with the company directly. This has meant that motor insurance certificates have become of almost no use at the roadside or even at the Nick within seven days! Road Wars (on Sky) used to be replete with examples. I think the insurance companies now say: "Certificates? Oh! What's the point?" [Snip] > In much of the world - such as the USA you need to show your > certificate to the medical practitioner before they will treat you. Fair comment. Nobody was saying that the traveller shouldn't take a copy with them. Makes me wonder: if I had a PDF for travel insurance displayed in Kindle on my phone will it be accepted by a US hospital in October? Not sure I'll risk that! May take it in both formats and try that one first. :-) [Snip] > So you do accept that paper has its uses? Yes the point was that YOU (probably) don't need to be doing the printing. That sounds like a limitation of Pipedream. I think the only way round that would be to print to a bitmap printer driver and then encapsulate that bitmap file in a PDF. Something of a fiddle, and time consuming on a RiscPC, of course. -- Tim Hill of timil.com . . . * supports TFT & shares in cheaper ethical telecoms http://tjrh.eu/phone * has a genuine & spam-proof address for Usenet http://www.invalid.org.uk/ * accepts incoming email: substitute postmaster@ for tim@ ... A classic example today of why I often wish people would send me things on paper, rather than by e-mail, though given Deutsche Post's exorbitant rates, I do understand why. A supplier e-mails me a customers hotel vouchers, as PDFs, for me to print out. There are ten of them, three to an A4 page, so four A4 pages. They do not open properly under RISC OS, so I print them out using Adobe Reader. One page's spool file is somewhere between 4.5 and 5MB. Using an HP 2100M Post Script 2 printer, Windows XP, USB->Parallel connection. Each page takes 25 to 30 minutes to print - no fun at all when the customer has been promised that they will be posted today. I suspect that the USB->Parallel connection may be partly to blame. I should try printing to file and seeing how long it takes to print under RISC OS... -- Russell http://www.russell-hafter-holidays.co.uk Russell Hafter Holidays E-mail to enquiries at our domain Need a hotel? <http://www.hrs.com/?client=en__blue&customerId=416873103>

I tried another page from the same supplier last night, printing to file from Adobe reader, then dropping the resulting PoScript file onto the PoScript2 printer on the RPC's icon bar. This spool file was 12MB, and took well over an hour to print out. So the USB->Parallel connection does not appear to be, at least in part, to blame. Perhaps in future I should just leave these files to print overnight. :-(( -- Russell http://www.russell-hafter-holidays.co.uk Russell Hafter Holidays E-mail to enquiries at our domain Need a hotel? <http://www.hrs.com/?client=en__blue&customerId=416873103>

No, they are customers hotel vouchers. There are ten of them, three to an A4 page, so four A4 pages. Big PDF files, are they? Some may suggest you email them to your customer for self-printing. ;-) Remember that customers booking directly with the same hotel are probably emailed vouchers, as you have been. > They do not open properly under RISC OS, so I print them out using > Adobe Reader. Are you using the PostScript driver? HP PS printers often seem to have a choice. > Each page takes 25 to 30 minutes to print - no fun at all when the > customer has been promised that they will be posted today. Good grief. Your PC/HP2100 combination must be hellishly slow by today's standards. I have never had a problem with a print taking that long with the 2550 (which is a few years old) although really overly-complex and/or really big pages do make it run out of memory: it has simply ignored a file once or twice. > I suspect that the USB->Parallel connection may be partly to blame. I > should try printing to file and seeing how long it takes to print under > RISC OS... How is the RiscPC connected to the printer? My printers are either USB or networked so I have never experienced a USB->|| bottleneck. -- Tim Hill of timil.com . . . * supports TFT & shares in cheaper ethical telecoms http://tjrh.eu/phone * has a genuine & spam-proof address for Usenet http://www.invalid.org.uk/ * accepts incoming email: substitute postmaster@ for tim@ ...
