Currently I use a KVM switch to switch the monitor > between machines, Thought of that but have the room and glad I went for two keyboards/mice/screens rather than KVM. When I was given a second 1280x1024 display I thought I'd play with the second output on the windoze box so now have three screens. But 1920x1080 on RISC OS is far better than 2560x1024 on windows simply because of all the windoze window furniture clutter and embiggened windows taking up a whole of a (1280) screen without needing to. > but if I were to replace paper copies (which I find > **much** easier to handle), with scanned copies, I wasn't suggesting that. It can be an uphill battle asking people to switch from sending paper to email(!!!): I have a dual filing system (one physical, one virtual) and wouldn't spend my time scanning paper documents I have been sent, just to file them away. [Snip] >and then I > would need to get either a fancy monitor like yours, Sorry. My 1280x1024 RISC OS display died. :-( A 22" 1920x1080 monitor is by no means fancy these days, nor particularly expensive. Per pixel, it was the most economical screen real estate available and it is true to say you can't have too many pixels. 85 quid is not a fancy price for HD loveliness. ;-) http://tinyurl.com/AOC-F22S [Snip] > If instead they were digital, I would need to log in to a > website to download the necessary certificates, then print them out. Unless you were to leave the dead tree thoughts behind and e-send your customer the same certificate you downloaded. [Snip] > Were I a crook I could probably send a dozen different customers a scan > of the same document and save a packet. You could do the same thing with paper documents, were you a forger. Remember: the first-time customer has no idea what any given certificate is supposed to look like. [Snip] > > May be different, I know, but I have had motor > Never. There are many cases now (apparently) where boy racers insure their pride and joy and then cancel the insurance but keep the certificate. Old Bill will nearly always now not rely on dox and always check the DVLA insurance database and/or with the company directly. This has meant that motor insurance certificates have become of almost no use at the roadside or even at the Nick within seven days! Road Wars (on Sky) used to be replete with examples. I think the insurance companies now say: "Certificates? Oh! What's the point?" [Snip] > In much of the world - such as the USA you need to show your > certificate to the medical practitioner before they will treat you. Fair comment. Nobody was saying that the traveller shouldn't take a copy with them. Makes me wonder: if I had a PDF for travel insurance displayed in Kindle on my phone will it be accepted by a US hospital in October? Not sure I'll risk that! May take it in both formats and try that one first. :-) [Snip] > So you do accept that paper has its uses? Yes the point was that YOU (probably) don't need to be doing the printing. [Snip] > Have you ever seen a PD document designed to be produced on a dot > matrix printer that has instead been printed with a PoScript printer > driver? A dot matrix printer > interprets the control codes and puts onto paper what is needed to make > a coherent and legible document, printed in an appropriate font. That sounds like a limitation of Pipedream. I think the only way round that would be to print to a bitmap printer driver and then encapsulate that bitmap file in a PDF. Something of a fiddle, and time consuming on a RiscPC, of course. -- Tim Hill of timil.com . . . * supports TFT & shares in cheaper ethical telecoms http://tjrh.eu/phone * has a genuine & spam-proof address for Usenet http://www.invalid.org.uk/ * accepts incoming email: substitute postmaster@ for tim@ ...
