The accounting is done using a free copy (cover disc) of Quicken, under Windows. Were I to store documents on a computer, I would, I imagine want to do that under RISC OS. Currently I use a KVM switch to switch the monitor between machines, but if I were to replace paper copies (which I find **much** easier to handle), with scanned copies, I would have to buy a scanner (the one I have - cost £10 - only works under Win98) and then I would need to get either a fancy monitor like yours, or a second. I was given my current monitor, so I would need to spend money on a fancy monitor, more money on a scanner, and still end up with a less convenient system. I just find it vastly simpler and quicker to look through half a dozen bits of paper, some which may have hand written notes on, rather than keeping loads of computer files. I can glance at several sheets of paper in the time it takes to open a single PDF. > > But booking confirmations require to be accompanied by > > insurance certificates which are only supplied on paper > > and must, by law, be given to the customer. > I understand that may be a requirement of the law > (really? which one?) The law that requires a tour operator to have a financial protection scheme in place to protect client's monies. If that scheme is insurance based, as mine is, the operator is required to issue a certificate of insurance to each customer. > or the issuer so you are stuck with it! I do not know whether there is anything that states that the certificate must be on paper rather than a digital document, but they are on paper. If instead they were digital, I would need to log in to a website to download the necessary certificates, then print them out. Much more time consuming than issuing pre-printed and pre-numbered paper certificates. Were I a crook I could probably send a dozen different customers a scan of the same document and save a packet. The paper certificates are individually numbered, so sending individual certificates by post is more secure than if I were allowed to send out scans of the paper certificates. > May be different, I know, but I have had motor Never. > and travel insurance certificates sent by email in the > past. In much of the world - such as the USA you need to show your certificate to the medical practitioner before they will treat you. In an emergency I would much rather have a document to show someone, rather than give them a URL or a phone number and trust that they would spend their time checking to see if cover were in place. > It would really only be necessary to forward certs if > they are printed on security paper of some sort with > watermarks and suchlike and in the unlikely event that > insured has to present that cert., back to the company in > the case of a claim. Unless your NCR paper is > pre-printed with other important information I wouldn't > worry. Have you ever seen a PD document designed to be produced on a dot matrix printer that has instead been printed with a PoScript printer driver? These PD docs are not WYSIWYG. As the on screen characters are all the same size, a laser prints them all the same size, and in the system font. And the control characters as well. A dot matrix printer interprets the control codes and puts onto paper what is needed to make a coherent and legible document, printed in an appropriate font. -- Russell http://www.russell-hafter-holidays.co.uk Russell Hafter Holidays E-mail to enquiries at our domain Need a hotel? <http://www.hrs.com/?client=en__blue&customerId=416873103>
