I remember having to learn one for linguistic studies but that's so long ago that I can't even remember now what it's called - was it the international phonetic alphabet? I do recall though that the international standard symbol for the neutral sound of the 'o' as in "Ascot" is represented by an upside-down 'e'. Whyever 'q'??? The other thing you've overlooked, is that Cockney English isn't the same as Yorkshire or Scouse English. Long 'a' or short 'a' is another factor. It sounds like trying to reinvent the wheel, but this time with added corners. Michael Harding Rev. Preb. M.D. Harding riscos@mdharding.org.uk

Or like destroying the wheel and dragging the cart along like a sledge. What is
wrong with understanding and using the enormous wealth of information conveyed
by the spelling of the words we have inherited from so many other languages?
Why the dumbing down (defined as "revise so as to appeal to those of little
education or intelligence")? If you can't spell, then do the very best you can
and the rest of us will do our best to understand you until you have learnt
more. A lot of current pronunciation is based on error, anyway. Just continue
your learning so that you can use the information each letter structure conveys.
This spelling revision mentality is very akin to that of vandalism. Maybe you
would change the spelling of that word and lose knowledge of where it came from.
This seems like deciding you can't understand or don't know what certain bytes
in CMOS are for, so you just set them to zero, or worse still let them be
spuriously set.

Ibsen in the original spelling really is a different language to
modern Norwegian, we know Shakespeare in the Johnson spelling of 200
years later, German changed a lot of spellings about 1900, eg theilen
-> teilen, the reform of the last 10 years was only a minor tidying up
of a really rather good system, the French have dropped the circumflex
accent in ô and û. Change always comes. But complete uniformity is
out of reach, you will not get the folk of Nyookasl (Newcastle) to
spell it Nyookaasl. They just won't do it. And it's a smaller change
than from s'Gravenhaag to Den Haag.

Ah yesss. I remember that. A couple of years after I moved to the
Netherlands I did two seasons of Dutch courses at the Utrecht
Volksuniversitiet. After the first season a new spelling revision was
annonunced. Suddenly instead of spelling the Dutch word for present
"cadeau" I had to start spelling it "kado". Plus all the other changes.
What was it now that changed with kippensoep (chicken soup) kippesoep?
> Ibsen in the original spelling really is a different language to

[snip]
You don't have to go back as far as Ibsen to see the changes in
Riksmal/Bokmål. The written language used in the Kristin Lavrensdatter
series (first published in the 1920's), whilst it is closer to modern
Bokmål than Ny Norsk is definitely not the same as modern Bokmål and it
takes some time to acclimatise to it.

Cadeau was the original spelling, the 'voorkeursspelling', and kado had been allowed as alternative. After the spelling reform of 1995 the alternatives were gone. Not really a problem if you never used them in the first place. > What was it now that changed with kippensoep (chicken soup) kippesoep? The 'tussen-n' (kippesoep -> kippensoep), a total mess which was corrected a little ten years later. Still doesn't make sense all the time, though. But all in all those changes were minor and completely insignificant compared what was suggested for the English language in this thread. :-) Regards, Frank

I think we must have been using text books written before '95. I arrived
in Holland in '96 and didn't start studying Dutch in earnest before '97.

Ah, so you want to type German and French characters while your
keyboard driver is set to English? I did not know the English keyboard
driver of RISC OS supported that. How do you do it?
I thought you were referring to the fact that you can switch keyboard
driver from English to German and French under RISC OS, so I thought I
should point out that you can do the same under Windows (and a bit
more comfortably, too).

Looking at it now I see that I have annotated a lot of extra items that must have been added in later versions. It is pretty easy to confirm the characters available with an editor and running through the keys with Alt and Alt-Shift.
