#3323 — OtherDevs for Simtec

FromChris Newman <cvjazz@waitrose.com>

SubjectOtherDevs for Simtec
Message-ID<525201d640cvjazz@waitrose.com>
Hi all,

Is there a definite list of OtherDevs details for the Simtec USB MassFS app?

I recently bought some of the flash drives fro Richard Torrens. At first they
didn't work with my Simtec Unipod on the RiscPC but I ferreted around in my
files & discovered my OtherDevs file wasn't up to date. I had some other sets
of details from various sources, sorted & coalesced them into one file,
weeding out the duplicates. (What a time consuming chore). However, the
drives then worked perfectly.

I now have an OthereDevs file of 103 entries!!!

The list at http://www.riscos.info/index.php/MassFS_OtherDevs_entries
which I think is maintained by Steve Potts has only about 37

The page at RiscInfo file:///IDEFS%3A%3Ah4.%24/USBbits/STD/Devs/DevsRscInf
has a very limited number & must be well out of date.

The URL in the MassFS help file (for creating new details) gives page not
found.
    http://www.stdevel.co.uk/massfs.html)

I think CJE keep a list as well because I was given the OtherDevs details
when I purchased something from them.

Using *USBDevices from a Task Window I was able to get the Vendor ID &
Product ID for another pen drive I had & made the details for it. ( The flags
for pen drives appear to be =LR_T or =LR or =L or =LRq so it didn't
take long to get a working model).

So now I have a ne OtherDevs definition but not quite sure where to send it.
or if anyone cares.

Any thoughts out there?

Not AFAIK.

I don't think it's maintained by anyone. It's a wiki - feel free to add to
it. That was my reason for creating it, because there was no other
comparable resource.

Thanks for that. As yet, I hav no idea how to add my stuff to the wiki but
I'll investigate. Is there an idiots guide for doing this.

Thanks Steve. I'll get to it as soon as I have a bit of time. Looks fairly
straightforward but if there are any pitfalls I'll be sure to find 'em. I
wouldn't say I was lacking in confidence but.........

Oooh! Thanks for that. I tried searching the MediaWiki handbook to find out
how to do pre tags but couldn't see it. Just came up with the space idea.
Just as well as what I know about HTML could be written on the back of a
stamp with room to spare.

There's some info here
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Formatting#HTML_tags
but it's fairly scattered, so locating it isn't easy.

Ah! Now I understand. Thanks again. The list looks pretty good now.

As Fred Bambrough pointed out, there may now be some doubles in the list
which could be pruned but I haven't time at the moment to check it out. That
doesn't seem to matter too much as even on my slow & ancient RiscPC, MassFS
interrogates the file so quickly there is no appreciable wait.

Cheers,

Well done, Chris! I'll prod Matt at STD and Simtec: they could at
least update their Unipod and MassFS support pages (last updated years
ago, apparently) to point to this wiki.

Any chance one of our wiki cognoscenti could add a way of downloading
the list as a file? Because Netsurf cut-and-paste is fiddly
(Select-All selects all the surrounding text as well as what's in the
panel we want; Select-click at top and Adjust-click at bottom doesn't
work; the final character refuses to get selected by any means).

The file (if zipped) would presumably carry a datestamp as a useful
indication of when it was last revised, so that the user can compare
it to the one already in use.

Easiest way is, from Netsurf, export the page as a text file & save it
somewhere, highlight & delete the bits from the top & bottom, leaving only
the actual Devs entries. Find where yours are stored (usually !MassFS in
!Boot.Resources. Good plan to save a copy of that somewhere in case things go
wrong.) Remove the devs entries you already have as they are all in the new
one you just downloaded, then copy & paste in the new ones. If you double
click on MassFS it should re-run it so the new devs are seen without having
to re-start your computer.
Good luck,

The user may have added his own enties to OtherDevs, so that they will
not necessarily be in the downloaded version.

Sounds like we need somebody to write a bit of PHP or something to run
on the download site:
-- invites you to drop your present Otherdevs file here
-- it adds anything new to the server's Otherdevs file, weeds out
duplicates, maybe adds comment to identify the contributor(s)
-- download new consolidated Otherdevs file

Yes, I have added at least half a dozen in the last year or two,
but gave up trying to pass them to STD when they evidently lost
interest or departed our scene or whatever ....

Does Chris fancy extending his list?

"Chris's List" is on the Wiki, so you could just add them directly -- that's
the whole point.

Blimey, beginning to sound like Schindler's list. What have I spawned?
It would be great if anyone who has a devs file that works & is not on the
list could add it. The more the merrier. It would also be helpful if they
could post on the News/Mail groups to let all know then we could keep our
OtherDevs file at the cutting edge, so to speak.
Yours, listing to starboard (or perhaps reaching for the port....)

Selecting and copy any text displayed in Netsurf is easy - just drag and
drop.

In Netsurf all you need to do is left click on the first character and
keep the button held down whilst you drag to the bottom of the text you
want to copy. Release the button and the selected text remains selected.
Now over the selected text, left click and hold down and drag to the
folder where the selected text to be saved. If you want to deselect any
text before saving or find you've missed something out then right click
and drag to deselect/select those bits.

That doesn't happen here. If I left click, I get a little red icon of a hand
but can't do anything with it. Have I got my netsurf set incorrectly?

Are you clicking exactly on a character? - I get a hand if the click is
not on a text character. (ver 2.8 RiscPC SA ROS v.4.02 and ver.2.7
Beagleboard-xm ROS v.5.18)
