That wasn't really my point. I thought that if you like model railways you might like real railways as well, and therefore might like to avoid driving, but these things do not always follow! > Train travel to Warrington, leaving Kenilworth at 07.47, arriving > Warrington central 10.46 would cost me £64.60 (putting in details for this > comimg Saturday). This would seriously affect the amount I have available > to spend on Riscos hardware/software. You can often get cheaper tickets by booking further ahead. At the moment you can get tickets for £20 each way Kenilworth - Warrington for early January, for example. The problem with public transport prices for most people is that having tied up quite a lot of capital in a car, and paid tax and insurance each year up front, the marginal cost of driving somewhere is pretty cheap, so the train fare naturally looks unrealistically expensive. If you do not have a car, train travel is often still good value considering the additional spending money you have from not keeping a car. Your original complaint was that having the London show clashing with the model railway show meant you couldn't get to any RISC OS shows as Warrington was too far to drive. But from Kenilworth (which I realise is only your nearest station, not your home address) the distances to Warrington and Harrow are only about 10 miles different by car, and some route planners reckon that Warrington is quicker to get to. So I guess that the London show is also too far for you to drive for a day trip? Unless, of course, you have a handy family member to stay overnight with in the London area! Train tickets from Kenilworth to Harrow look like they are slightly more expensive than tickets to Warrington too. No need to volunteer more information - I'm only looking up stuff to distract myself from getting on with programming something! But I think it shows that travel choices are often affected by personal circumstances in a way that is hard for outsiders to follow. Just as choosing the date for a show is affected by circumstances that outsiders have little grasp of. For what it's worth, there were a few years pre-Covid when the London Show was on a weekend when our handy family member in the London area was routinely away running Hallowe'en events in the Peak District, so as exhibitors we either had to do the Durham to London trip in a day, by train (4.5 hours each way), or shell out for an overnight stay in London, which costs a lot more than Warrington! -- Matthew Phillips Durham
