I made a mistake in my previous post.  What I meant was:

BTW I just realized that what I was proposing could make use of bitfields also:
enum class Val { unsigned long E1, E2, E3, E4 : 2 };

This way it could be used as such:
struct A
{
   Val v1, v2, v3, v4;
};

Thus:
sizeof(A) would be equal to 1
