Well, if it's an angry bear then we don't care how many pieces ..... :-) Alas both of those options are just a bit heavy to carry through hill country unless you're 19, large, and take lots of steroids. All-around for Alaska, .338 WM. If bears are a concern, the top ctg should be a heavier bullet. Hmm ... they USED to make something called a "drilling" ... like a heavy rifle or shotgun with a small-caliber rifle barrel on top, usually .22 ... good for big stuff and for rabbits roasting on the campfire.

Savage still makes a .22/.410 combo. I don't know if .410 has become more available with the .410/.45LC revolvers. Like 16 gauge it got scarce. My mother had a 16 ga. which was considered a ladies shotgun in her day but now it's all 12 or 20.

These days alas, you'd be pressed to find 16ga on any shelf, it just kind of faded away. You CAN still buy 10ga ... but again you'd have to special-order the shells.

Kicks like a motherfucker though. Think there are still three or four name makers of the 10ga. More into 'small cannon' territory :-) A bit 'unsporting' too ... From pix I've seen, they weren't even meant to be held, had a sort of tang near the center point meant to be hooked around the rim of a boat. You fired them from a prone position. Shotgun bores are all basically the old musket bores from longer back. I think 28ga was .50 cal, 12ga was nominally the Brown Bess .75 cal. Heavy-barrel rifles (and pistols) can be VERY accurate. Ruger used to sell a .22 auto with a serious bull barrel, like 10 or 12 inches and nearly an inch wide. Perfect accuracy even single-handed. Remember those for the Zombie Apocalypse :-) I remember a few old rifles that seemed to resemble the common single-shot shotguns of today. Lots of steel, but usually .22 or something close. One in .357 would be cool. Ah : https://www.gunsinternational.com/guns-for-sale-online/rifles/henry-rifles/henry-357-single-shot.cfm?gun_id=102352276 Pretty close. My father figured a 12 gauge was more suitable. He had a side by side and my uncle had an over and under and they would debate the merits. I think I was 14 before I got my own, a Mossberg 12 gauge bolt action. https://www.guns.com/news/2013/08/21/mossberg-bolt-action-shotguns-odd- never-felt-so-good Part of the attraction was some upstate NY counties were shotgun only for deer hunting to limit collateral damage. Nimrods from NYC were notorious. People were known to paint 'horse' or 'cow' on their livestock to aid in species identification. The best solution was for the mighty hunter to stay in a nice warm ginmill while a local filled his tag and strapped the field dressed deer on the fender of the hunter's Cadillac for the triumphal journey beck to civilization. It was a win-win.
