From the archives of the two groups in question, it looks like there was no activity in either of them for a period of a few weeks. So it is not surprising that your leafnode installation dropped them, which is why Thunderbird thinks they no longer exist. The leafnode documentation suggests several possible workarounds such as lengthening the timeout period in leafnode's configuration file, always running fetchnews with the -n option to prevent it from dropping groups, or using a nightly cron job to touch the relevant files. Read that documentation and implement one of the solutions to prevent the problem from happening again. To fix the immediate problem, it's probably sufficient to create empty files in /var/spool/news/interesting_groups for each of the missing groups. Then run fetchnews so that leafnode can do it's thing, and Thunderbird should once again see the groups. You have to fix the problem with leafnode before worrying about Thunderbird.

But in this case, subscribing to them would present an empty group with a place holder message. Clicking on it would activate leafnode fetching it again. This is not happening, Thunderbird does not see the group at all. Can not even subscribe to it. > > The leafnode documentation suggests several possible workarounds such as > lengthening the timeout period in leafnode's configuration file, always > running fetchnews with the -n option to prevent it from dropping groups, > or using a nightly cron job to touch the relevant files. Does this newsserver have an administrator ?
Because that's how you get alt.* entries put back.
Normally, group removal is related to the level of traffic
measured in a group. If a group has only spam in it, and no
topical posts, an administrator who is bored and is doing
alt.* cleanup can remove it. For server admins who run
*.support newsgroups, you can post to such a group and
ask them "WTF are you doing?" and so on.
I don't know if this server has a *.support style newsgroup or not.
Maybe you'll have to contact the administrator (politely)
via the email address. Assuming the email address
still works of course.
https://news.individual.net/contact.php
An administrator might have strong views on "naming conventions"
for newsgroups. Yet we have
alt.english.usage
alt.usage.english
on servers and nobody seems to be put off by that. I'm sure
there is a "story" behind that one...

I've had similar problems with leafnode. It insists on removing groups
that haven't had any attention for a while. It does this by removing
them from /var/spool/news/interesting.groups/. They're just empty
files, existing only to tell leafnode which newsgroups to download. But
for some reason these files keep disappearing. This is very irritating!
There doesn't seem to be an elegant way to stop this behaviour. I've
tried making all files in this directory read only, as well as creating
a script to make sure these files exist whenever I run fetchnews. It is
as follows:
===============================================
#!/bin/bash
while read ng
do
touch /var/spool/news/interesting.groups/$ng
done < /usr/local/etc/newsgroups.txt
chmod 440 /var/spool/news/interesting.groups/*
===============================================
This must be run as root, and the file /usr/local/etc/newsgroups.txt,
which it reads, must contain the list of newsgroups you want, one per
line. I run fetchnews from another script that first calls this script.
> 2) Have those groups really disappeared?
From your leafnode setup, yes.

I've tried that, but I've never seen it work. Hence the need to touch
files in /var/spool/news/interesting.groups/ instead.

I think the trick is to ensure that when running fetchnews, the -n option is always used. I just ran it without the -n option, and it un-subscribed three groups that were empty on the news server I use, and that I had already removed from selecting in my news reader. Normally, I run a script called getnews that runs fetchnews via sudo with the options I want. Yes, that's what I did. The reason I wrote a script to run it in the
first place was to ensure the -n option was always specified. But, as I
said, I've never seen it work. It still deleted groups I wanted to
read. I don't know why -n doesn't work for me; it just doesn't.

Yep, that's what I do too. My script is called fetchnews-get-news. I
have a launcher for it on my desktop so I can run it with a click.

I thought of that too. But it just seemed simpler to use my script so
the directory entries are updated when I need them (ie. when I run
fetchnews).
But, whatever floats your boat...
