Yes.

But in this case, subscribing to them would present an empty group with
a place holder message. Clicking on it would activate leafnode fetching
it again.

This is not happening, Thunderbird does not see the group at all. Can
not even subscribe to it.

They exist.

The directory "/var/spool/news/alt/comp/os/linux/" also exists and is
populated. Same for "/var/spool/news/alt/comp/lang/pascal/".
