It looks that the defaults were chosen at the time of DEC PDP-11
machines whose disk drives were demarcated into blocks (512 bytes)
tracks (10 or 19) and cylinders. The better controllers could read a
bunch of tracks on a given cylinder and even seek to the next cylinder
if required. I am not sure early versions of UNIX could do that, though.

I assume those have never been changed. Later, hard drives would have a
block size of 4096 bytes. With all the hardware buffering right in the
drive these days, the very concept of block-size is not very important.
Not useless, but generally unimportant.
