Custer was big on taking the women and children hostage. His Crow scouts 
told him the encampment across the river was really big but he may have 
thought the warriors were elsewhere. We'll never know. Reno had engaged 
and made a hasty fighting retreat but battlefield comms were nonexistent. 
Another thing we'll never know for sure is what Benteen did or didn't do. 
He had despised Custer since Washita and may have hung Custer out to dry.

In the long term the Crow won, sort of. Their rez is a whole lot of 
nothing. They tried a carpet mill like Anadarko but that failed. They 
built a casino at near the battlefield to lure in tourists but that 
failed.

They're sitting on one of the largest coal deposits in the country but 
Obama & Crew rained on that parade. Hardin is not on the rez but a private 
detention facility would have offered employment. That failed.
