That enable the war leaders to pull together a winning force. Custer was not the best and brightest perhaps but he had distinguished himself in the Civil War aka The War Between the States to maintain the Union. The Confederacy only wanted to keep slavery but Lincoln and the United States were interested in maintaining the Union (of the States). We won that time but the Confederacy after defeat pursued the path of propaganda and won the peace. Even Northerners were convinced that there was some heroism in the fight to maintain slavery because that cause of war was not mentioned too much anywhere. Lincoln had wanted to compensate the planter class where he had in-laws by the way, for the freedom of their slaves and hoped to ship them back to Africa. The USA was rife then with anti-black racism from North to South but the last gasp of the abolition was sealed with the split election of Rutherford B. Hayes which was decided by withdrawal of the Federal Troops from the South where upon the Black Codes were put in place to keep the blacks who had stayed in the South subservient to the White citizens. Blacks were not permitted to move around except on the White employer's business. The Franchise was denied them. Lynching became the terrorist aspect of this outrage against human liberty. bliss
