I think you will find that in order to run as a daemon a process has to 
disconnect stdin  and redirect stdout/stderr in some way.

I believe processes that are not so disconnected are deemed to have a 
'tty' of some sort attached..a 'controlling tty'  is a phrase dredged up 
from the past..  and therefore is deemed to be under some form of user 
control..I think this shows up in the process table, too.



This is all hazy and from long ago, so take it as a guide only.
