Is that really an accurate term for Java, which after all does
have a separate compilation step (to bytecode), though the result
of that compilation then either has to be interpreted or compiled
(possibly at runtime) to native code? Well, maybe it's a quibble
about terminology, but to me there's a distinct difference between
Java and languages such as Perl that don't (necessarily?) have a
separate compilation phase but are compiled/interpreted directly
at runtime.

I started to say "well, now I *know* you're not talking about Java,
which has much stronger notions of typing than, say, Perl" --
but perhaps by "loose typing" you also mean to include deciding
at runtime which version of a method to call (what C++ calls
"virtual functions")?
