That does sound like a hardware problem. Does your computer have a floppy
drive? If so you could boot memtest from a floppy.

To me it seems like a hardware problem. You have already tried to remove
the CD and that did help a bit. Other things that might be worth trying to
replace are:

PSU
RAM
motherboard
CPU
HD
all pci cards (if any)

I would try replacing things in the order above based on the likelyhood
that they cause your problem and how easy things are to replace.
