I have noticed that on some motherboards, the CDROM has the in a particular
location, eg slave on cable 0 or sometimes slave on cable 1. I have also
discovered that a bios upgrade sometimes cures such problems, which is very
odd, because Linux does not use the bios much, so I am guessing that there
is some sort of device initialization that occurs at POST which causing
Linux to subsequently fail.

What is the make and model of the motherboard and what CPU is installed?
What graphics card and slot type are you using?

Mark.
