If your TV lacks VGA input S-Video is probably the way to go. However, for
that to work you will have to configure your laptop to send video in a
format that your TV understands. Depending on where you live different
standards are used. In most of Europe interlaced PAL is used, in the US
NTSC is used. The differences between PAL and NTSC from your computers
point of view is the resolution, the refresh rate and if the image should
be interlaced.

What do you mean by "running that much cable is not an option"? Don't you
want to connect the laptop to the TV by cable?

Sound is the easy part, connect line in on the TV to line out on you
laptop. If your laptop doesn't have line out use the speaker output
connection instead.
