I'm not a Linux noob, but in this case, it would be best to treat me 
that way.

What I want to accomplish is to display from my laptop computer to the 
TV.  For example, my stepson sent my wife an Email that I'd like to 
show her without her having to read it over my shoulder.  Audio is 
also required.  An angled view of the laptop's screen stinks.

It would also be fun if I could send a movie rip to the TV.

The laptop has only S-Video and VGA outputs, but running that much 
cable is not an option.  In addition, the laptop is connected to my 
LAN via a WiFi b/g, not n, which I think is not fast enough.  If an 
ethernet device would work, there is Cat5 cable near the TV.  I just 
have NO CLUE what to plug it in to that would in turn connect to the 
TV...

Is there some reasonable way to accomplish what I want?  If so, what 
do you recommend?

If it matters, the laptop runs Slackware64 version 13.37 and has 
FireWire, USB, a modem, etc.  Audio outs are line and headphone.

If I'm asking in the wrong place, I'd appreciate pointers rather than 
flames.
