I can switch desktops with <ctrl>+<alt>+[up|down|left|right]arrow.
I would try to xbindeys those buttons to whatever keyboard sequence
switches desktops for you.  (use xte for the keystrokes).

xte 'keydown Control_L' 'keydown Alt_L' 'key Right' 'keyup Alt_L' 'keyup Control_L'

switches desktops to the right, just like pressing <Ctrl>+<ALT>+Right Arrow.

So put the corresponding commands, along with a button, in xbindkeys config.

"xte 'keydown Control_L' ..."
b:N

where N is the button.
