> Like I said, it's about the music for you. Do you play an instrument? My guess is no. For me, I can even hate the music while recognizing the musicianship. Knopfler and Buckingham are fine players but they're not innovators, Beck is. He's pushed the envelope of what can be done the same way Hendrix did. Look, making great melodies with pentatonic scales or modes is all well and good but certain players go beyond that... and you aren't familiar with the some of the sounds so it grates on you. The same thing happens for many who listen to jazz, they just don't understand what the intrigue is. This isn't a slight, it's a fact based on music being a language. If you only use (or only listen to) a few of the available language components you get a relatively generic conversation (i.e. the blues are 'boring' to a lot of people). Even limiting yourself to the traditional (Western) 12 tone scale, music can be much more than that, even a simple 3 chord blues progression can be far more exciting when superimposition comes into play.
>

Racket is not music, just because it is composed of notes. Beck may be
an "innovator," but he's not a musician. What's the point of playing
any musical instrument if you're not going to play *music* on it?
