I think you've got a typo in there... this is what I get:

--> re.split('[ ,]', 'foo bar, spam,maps')
['foo', 'bar', '', 'spam', 'maps']

I would add a * to get rid of that empty element, myself:
--> re.split('[ ,]*', 'foo bar, spam,maps')
['foo', 'bar', 'spam', 'maps']
