If you have such a demand to do that just use that variable! A variable in a value context will be dereferenced anyway! The problem is appearing only the other way round; that a value cannot be used in reference contexts. You break the symmetry that you have in other contexts - in "read"-type procedures you have references, in "white"-type procedures you have values specified; and that makes sense.
