I use them fairly often for this construct:
  {
  FastCat sb = new FastCat( 2);
  sb.append( "xxx");
  sb.append( "yyyy");
  thing = sb.toString();
  }

  {
  FastCat sb = new FastCat( 2);

    {
    sb.append( "aaa");
