Interesting cae, but even here I would be inclined to use a variation
of "extract method":

thing = cat("xxx", "yyyy");

String cat(String... strings) {
  FastCat sb = new FastCat( 2);
  for (String str: strings) {
    sb.append(str);
  }
}

...
