A UML diagram might as well be code. It is something of ours.
Why expect them to be able to read it?
As to possibly not knowing their own requirements, that is quite
possible. Many a person knows how to do his job as it is currently
configured. That does not mean that he knows how to discuss the whys
and wherefores of it.
