It would be "easier" to code this up in a number of languages, but I 
am trying to build a core runtime for a compiler that will compile 
either to Java or to JVM, either one of which, it seems, I will need 
the core language primitives to be defined somehow, and right now 
the fastest version of the runtime that I have implemented is in 
Java; things like Scala and the like have not been as fast.
