Lawrence, normalization is basically a set of design techniques
associated with the relational data model, and the relational data model
is a _logical_ data model, not a conceptual one that defines the
semantics. So how is normalization integral to semantics again?

And by the way, if you can't define a relation without using the term
"normalization" then you're missing the point. And don't confuse a
modern relational database with the relational model.
