This related example [1] invokes pack() to resize the enclosing Window 
as rows are added, up to a defined limit. Because pack() calls 
validate(), the example works with Jeff's suggestion in the 
ActionListener: list.setFont(list.getFont().deriveFont(16.0f));

If the Window can remain fixed in size, it's enough to just do as 
markspace suggests: list.revalidate()
