setFont is a JComponent method.  I wonder if the JList needs to be 
informed somehow that its font has change?  May need to poke around 
under the code a bit to figure out how the view window is being 
calcualted to understand what might not get updated.

If nothing else, try a revalidate(); that causes the LayoutManager to 
get involved, which may be what you want.
